What is Reiki?

Reiki is a method of stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It’s administered by laying on hands and can be easily learned by anyone. The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words – Rei which means “God’s Wisdom or the Higher Power” and Ki which is “life force energy”. So Reiki is actually “spiritually guided life force energy.”

We all have a life force energy that runs through us, you may have heard it called Chi, Qi or Ki. It is the thing that makes us alive. It also extends beyond the physical body; what is often referred to as the aura, or auric field. When this life force energy is high and flowing freely, we are healthier and happier, and when it is low, or restricted or blocked in some way, we are more prone to ill health and stress.

How does Reiki work?

When we are stressed, are feeling low, have negative belief patterns or feelings about/towards ourselves – whether consciously or unconsciously – our life force energy is affected. It becomes blocked or restricted in some way, or just does not flow as freely and abundantly. The result is symptoms such as impaired function in the physical body, low mood, fatigue, less resilience… We feel “off” somehow, less engaged with life, less connected with ourselves and those around us.

Reiki heals by flowing through the affected parts of the energy field and charging them with positive energy. It raises the vibratory level of the energy field in and around the physical body where the negative thoughts, feelings and belief patterns are attached. This causes the negative energy to lovingly release. Reiki clears, straightens and heals the energy pathways, thus allowing the life force to flow in a healthy, natural and abundant way.

Who can learn Reiki?

Anyone! There are no prerequisites to Reiki Training other than a willingness to receive the energy. There is a natural progression through training beginning with Reiki I, then Reiki II, and then Reiki Master. There are also further expansions you can take depending on the lineage of Reiki you train in, and you can always explore other lineages too. Usui Sensei, the founder of Reiki said the most important thing for a Reiki practitioner to do is to seek to improve the quality and quantity of Reiki. Therefore, Reiki is always evolving and expanding, so there will always be more classes to take and avenues to explore.

What is Reiki Lineage? And why are there so many different names for types of Reiki?

Reiki is a technique that is passed on from teacher to student over and over. If one has Reiki, then they will be part of a succession of teachers leading back to the founder of the system of Reiki one is practicing. In the case of Usui Reiki for example, the lineage would lead back to Dr. Usui.

Reiki is always evolving and expanding to meet the needs of the world. Different people experience these expansions of the energy in different ways and then begin to teach and share them. People also develop different techniques and ways of working with Reiki such as using crystals. The growth of Reiki is limitless and the ways to apply it equally without limit, and so there will always be different nuances to explore. None are better or worse than the others. It is down to you to see which you are drawn to and to follow your intuition to the training or therapist that feels right for you.

What does Reiki feel like?

This varies massively person to person. Some will feel warmth or tingling; others may feel nothing at all. Some may experience emotions releasing whilst others just feel a sense of peace and calm. Reiki is always working for the highest good and has its own wisdom. It also respects free will and as it is guided by Divine consciousness, it can do no harm. It will work WITH you in the way that is best for you on that day, at that time. It is a very safe and loving form of treatment from newborn to end of life.

As a Reiki practitioner, most will feel some form of sensation through their hands. This may be experienced as heat, tingling, a kind of forcefield type feeling, or there may be no physical sensation at all, just an inner knowing of where to treat and how to work. As a practitioner, your ongoing work is to develop your relationship with Reiki and let it teach and guide you. You are not the one “doing” the healing; you are a vessel/channel for Reiki to flow through to serve the person you are working with. Thus you cannot do Reiki wrong as you are not the one “doing” anything. It will always go to where it is most needed. The best Reiki practitioners are people who know how to step out of the way, to trust the energy and to follow it. The more self-work we do to create space and clarity within us, the better we are able to serve as channels for Reiki and be of optimum service to those we have the privilege of working with.

Do all healers/energetic workers use Reiki?

Anyone doing healing work will work with the life force energy in some way, but Reiki can only be used by those who have been attuned to it. There may be some people out there who naturally align with Reiki, but most will need to receive attunement to Reiki energy which is done during Reiki training. In certain types of Reiki, namely Holy Fire Reiki®, attunements may be referred to as placements, or ignitions. People already engaged in healing work often report a big change in the strength and vibration of their healing work after taking Reiki training.

What happens during Reiki training?

During Reiki training you will receive the attunements/placements/ignitions for the level you are taking. This means you now have Reiki. It cannot be taken away; you cannot lose it. Once you have been attuned to Reiki, you have it for life. (Yay!) You will be taught how to treat yourself, how to treat others and be given ideas and inspiration for the other countless ways you can use Reiki in your day to day life. You will have the opportunity to give and receive Reiki treatments with fellow students, to deepen your awareness and also to create new friendships which will have their foundation in the wonderful shared experience of Reiki.

How does Reiki training work online?

As previously mentioned, Reiki is always expanding to meet the needs of the world. The Reiki attunements/placements/ignitions are now able to be done effectively at distance and work very well using technology such as Zoom where the teacher and students are live together. In fact, this meeting of technology and Reiki is not as new a development as people may think. Mrs Tanaka, one of the prominent figures in the early history of Reiki, was known to give distant attunements over the phone!

Currently, the emphasis in online classes is a little more on self-Reiki (always good!) and distance Reiki (very helpful at the moment!). You will also learn all the techniques for treating in-person, as well as getting the opportunity to practice different Japanese Reiki Techniques utilising Breakout Rooms on Zoom. After class, you will be able to use your Reiki skills effectively and confidently in all ways. Plus you can learn in your pyjamas! How good is that?!
