“Do you ever daydream about how you would like to be living your life, your ideal job or the person you would like to become?

Did you always think you would be doing something different? Does something always get in the way? Time, money, family commitments?

I did!! So many wasted years...

This is my story of the journey to living my ideal life after recovering from breast cancer and I hope it will inspire at least one other person to make a change and follow their dreams.”

Introduction

“Firstly, I just want to say this book isn’t really about the cancer. Although I speak about it here and its part of my journey, the book is really about what happened after the cancer. It’s not a sad story or a poor me story. My cancer journey is here as it was THE reason I gave my life a shakeup and started doing what I have always wanted to do. It was during this shakeup that I thought, why aren’t we all following our dreams and living our ideal lives anyway? We seem to get caught up in getting through everyday life or drift in and out of jobs that don’t always do anything for us other than pay the bills. Why do we wait for a tragedy, or incident, or wake up call, to finally start doing what we have always wanted to do?

I know this isn’t true of everyone but goodness me I have conversations with people all the time that DO feel this way. It was during a fundraising event that I felt an overwhelming urge to get a megaphone and yell at the top of my voice, ‘Hey! You lot! Don’t wait for cancer or a tragedy to start following your dreams. Don’t waste any more time! DO IT NOW!’.

That moment has stayed with me ever since and inspired me to write this book. A chain of events over a period of time has brought me to this place and whenever I met people over the years and told them about my journey, people would tell me, ‘I love your story Dawn, you should write a book’! This was never a reality for me at all but over time and hearing this repeatedly, one day I thought why not?! Maybe I could. Eeeeek.

What if, instead of yelling with a megaphone and telling people to follow their dreams like a nutter, I could write a book and inspire people to do it instead? It’s been somewhat cathartic writing this book and has also brought up lots of memories, some things which already I had forgotten about. Some amazing and some truly sad. I’ve cried, I’ve felt enormously proud of my family, and it’s given me renewed enthusiasm and determination to continue on my journey and live my dream life. I am already doing it; my life is completely different now and I am grateful every day to still be here. But to still be here AND doing what I always wanted to do fills my heart.

If I can inspire at least one person to start following their dreams, it will have been worth it, and I’d be absolutely delighted!”
